UW CIBER’s partnership with the Center of Excellence for Global Trade and Supply Chain Management at Highline College includes a Supply Chain Study Abroad program. The program follows products in the supply chain to and from Washington state and Vietnam. It also includes Wenatchee Valley, North Seattle, Tacoma Community, Lake Washington Technical, Columbia Basin and Shoreline Community Colleges. Before departure students visit an apple orchard and packaging facility in Eastern Washington as well as Brooks Sports headquarters to learn about footwear design. Once in Vietnam, they experience the other end of these supply chains by touring a cold storage facility for perishable agricultural imports and Brooks’ shoe factory. Given the 170,000 jobs in the global trade and supply chain sector in Washington state, the program directly contributes to workforce development. In addition, understanding Vietnam is important as organizations decouple from China for national security or other reasons.
